Guitar World

I was the design director of this two-person art staff which included designer Julie Soltz and a part-time photo editor. We each had to do a bit of everything at Guitar World, which led me to assign a lot of original photography. I was lucky enough to work with some incredible photographers very early in their careers, including Emily Shur and Stacy Kranitz. And I also collaborated directly with some supremely talented musicians. During my time at the magazine, Guitar World regularly outsold Rolling Stone on newsstands.

Guitar World redesign

I did a major overhaul of the magazine's design. The edict was to make the loudest music magazine in the world. To give it a unique look, I commissioned Kevin Dresser to design a custom slab serif typeface with stackable inlines and shadows. When the design needed to go even louder, I discovered the trick was to add flames.
